What is GradWriteSlack?

GradWriteSlack (previously Thesis writing group) started as a virtual writing group for graduate students to counter-act the often lonely process of thesis-writing. It has now evolved into a comprehensive support community for graduate students (at all stages of their degrees) and post-docs. In addition to supporting each other's writing endeavours, we have discussions on mental health, self care, motivation, goal setting, accountability, and many more!

How do I join this virtual community?

Click on any of the "Join" or "Join slack" buttons on our page and be directed to our email.

Alternatively, email us at "gradwriteslack[at]gmail.com" and we will get back to you with 3-5 business days.

How does this group work?

Like anything in life, you get out what you put in. This group is beneficial as long as you show up, join our dedicated writing sessions and interact with your colleagues as much or as little as you need. Additional information will be provided to you once you join.

To find current writing blocks or challenges, please go to our "writing sessions" page.

Additionally, this group is run by volunteers who are also graduate students and post-docs.

While we try our best to respond to questions and requests as quickly as possible, please understand that we all have our own work and other commitments. We welcome any help you would like to provide. We are all in this together!

Please note: We provide a community for like-minded graduate students and post-docs engaging in any form of academic writing, coding or work. While we work together in writing blocks using different tools, all information is crowdsourced and we are not professional writers. We don’t provide instruction on writing, proofreading or editing services. However, we can connect you to people who provide some of those services!

I am not writing yet. Can I still join?

You don’t have to be writing your thesis to join - we support each other through all kinds of academic writing and related life situations. We have channels on goal setting, accountability, parenting as a grad student, selfcare, supervisor relationships, and many more! We believe that a community of folks who know what you are going through can be helpful at all stages of the graduate degree process.

Are there any writing sessions in my timezone?

We are over 600 academic trainees strong, with members from over 18 timezones.

We have run several writing challenges and dedicated writing times in ET, CET and AUS time zones. All our writing sessions are currently moderated by fellow trainees who have been amazing volunteers.

If you do not see a writing session within your timezone, and you are able to volunteer, we welcome trying a writing session within your timezone.

Do I have to pay to join?

We are a free, volunteer run group, not currently charging for membership. Although this may change in the future depending on our needs and to better serve you.
